Madrid presents dessert created for Pope Leo's visit

Bakers in Madrid and local officials on Wednesday (June 3) unveiled a new dessert to mark Pope Leo’s upcoming visit to the Spanish capital.

The sweet, named “Cor Unum” – Latin for “one heart” – is a butter cookie filled with lemon cream and strawberry jam, coated in white chocolate and decorated with yellow lines and the Vatican coat of arms.

Its creators said the design reflects the colours of the Vatican flag and the spirit of unity associated with the Augustinian tradition.

Free samples, including gluten‑free versions, will be handed out in Puerta del Sol during the pope’s visit.

Boxes of the cookies will also be available for sale at bakeries across the city.

Leo will visit Spain from June 6 to 12 during which he will also stop at Barcelona, Montserrat and the Canary Islands. He will meet King Felipe and Queen Letizia, and will be the first pope to address the Spanish parliament.
