Bavaria's unique lake procession marks Corpus Christi

Rowing boats decorated with flowers and church banners crossed Bavaria's Staffelsee lake on Thursday (June 4) as villagers in traditional costumes marked Corpus Christi with a unique procession in the southern German state.

After a church service in Seehausen near Murnau, First Communion children, residents and visitors boarded boats for the procession across the lake to Woerth island, accompanied by prayers, singing and brass music.

“Well, this is the first time I’ve been along for the ride, because I’m actually just from the local area, and I’m really looking forward to it,” said participant Christina Wild. 

Corpus Christi is a Catholic holiday celebrating the presence of Christ. In Seehausen, the holiday is also a celebration of local identity and community.

"The tradition shared by the whole village is actually very important to the community," said local Albert. "For me, today is actually the most important church holiday."

The procession stops at different altars, including one in a chapel on Woerth island, before the boats return to the mainland, where those who drowned in the lake are commemorated. The custom dates back to 1935.
