Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue was illuminated in green on Friday (June 5) to mark World Environment Day and raise awareness about environmental issues.


The landmark changed colour and glowed green above visitors gathered below the monument. 


The event formed part of activities organized by the Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary to mark the World Environment Week.


Christ the Redeemer, one of Brazil's most recognizable landmarks, is often illuminated in different colours to mark public events and awareness campaigns.
