La Paz began its 40-day carnival season on Sunday, January 18, with the traditional “Desentierro del Pepino” ceremony — a symbolic ritual that marks the rebirth of the city’s iconic mischievous character.

Hundreds of residents gathered outside the General Cemetery to watch a mock funeral procession. People dressed in traditional attire carried Pepino’s purple coffin through the streets, led by the municipal band and La Paz Mayor Ivan Arias.

Beauty queens from three regions joined the ceremony and attempted to wake the ‘Pepino’ with kisses. The ritual ended in celebration as Pepino was revived, prompting cheers from crowds of children and adults.

Once revived, Pepino jumped out of his coffin wearing red and green, the colors of the La Paz flag, sparking the first major celebration of the 2026 carnival season. Folkloric groups danced alongside city officials, marking the start of the city’s long-awaited festivities.

Inspired by European harlequins and adapted with Andean elements, Pepino represents the joy and playful spirit of La Paz’s carnival. The event blends urban celebration with Aymara customs, including offerings to the Pachamama.
