Mayon Volcano logged 17 volcanic earthquakes and a rockfall event over a 24-hour monitoring period, keeping the volcano under Alert Level 3, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported Thursday, November 5.
In its latest bulletin, state volcanologists noted a crater glow—locally termed banaag—at the summit, confirming the ongoing presence and movement of magma beneath the crater.
Mayon also produced a moderate steam-laden plume that rose 100 meters before drifting southwest.Volcano monitoring parameters measured on Nov. 4 showed sulfur dioxide emissions averaging 2,127 tonnes per day.
Ground deformation data indicates the volcanic structure remains inflated overall, despite minor, short-term deflation observed along its northeastern slopes.
Alert Level 3 signifies high volcanic unrest, indicating that a hazardous eruption is still possible within weeks or days.
PHIVOLCS reminded the public that entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) remains strictly prohibited due to potential hazards, including sudden explosions, rockfalls, lava flows, and ashfall. -RA Sibag/Paraluman News
