Ukraine ushered in the New Year amid ongoing conflict with Russia, with power shortages leaving much of Kyiv in darkness and Independence Square eerily silent at midnight.

Ukraine rings in the New Year under blackout, as Kyiv faces power shortages amid ongoing conflict with Russia.

Ukraine welcomed in the new year with few festivities as the country enters another calendar year in conflict with its larger neighbour Russia, who invaded its European neighbour in 2022.


Much of the city spent the moment in darkness as power shortages continue to cripple much of life in the city.


As the clock hit midnight, lights were dimmed and an eerie silence surrounded Kyiv's iconic Independence Square.
