A volunteer, who is part of a team known as “Petal Protectors,” was out on Roosevelt Island on Friday (April 24) as more than 100 cherry trees reached peak bloom, drawing crowds eager to celebrate one of New York City’s most popular spring traditions.
Roosevelt Island is located just east of Manhattan.
“People don’t always realize how delicate these trees are,” said "Petal Protector" Nicole Abrams-Copquin, a recently arrived island resident. “We want people to be able to enjoy them year after year.”
The volunteers remind visitors not to touch or pull on the fragile branches, which can be easily damaged during the brief flowering season. They also give out information flyers.
The blossoms attracted visitors from around the United States and abroad, many saying the vivid pinks and whites offered a welcome burst of color after winter.
“They’re absolutely beautiful,” said Cheryl Monson, 73, visiting from Australia. “We don’t have cherry blossoms, so this is a highlight of coming to New York.”
