MANILA – Malacañang announced the suspension of work in government offices and classes at all levels in public and private schools in Metro Manila and 16 provinces starting 1 p.m. on Friday.

The work and class suspension was contained in Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 132 signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto by authority of the President.

The cancellation was approved following the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), in anticipation of the further enhancement of the southwest monsoon (habagat) by a low pressure area that has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

MC No. 132 covers Metro Manila, Abra, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Batangas, Cavite, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro.

Government agencies providing basic and health services, disaster preparedness and response, and other vital services will continue to operate, according to the order.

Local chief executives may also suspend classes and/or work in government offices in their respective areas.

The suspension of work or adoption of alternative work arrangements in the private sector will be left to management.

MC No. 132 takes effect immediately. (PNA)
