Authorities have yet to locate former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Gerald Bantag despite an operation conducted in Ifugao over the weekend, prompting the Philippine National Police (PNP) to reaffirm its commitment to pursuing the high-profile fugitive.
According to the Police Regional Office-Cordillera (PRO-CAR), law enforcers acted on information regarding Bantag's alleged whereabouts and carried out an operation on Nov. 1 in Sitio Alupapan, Barangay Pugol, Lamut, Ifugao. The operation, however, did not result in an arrest because Bantag was not at the location when police arrived.
PRO-CAR clarified that Bantag did not evade arrest, noting that he was not present in the area during the implementation of the warrant.
Bantag is wanted in connection with the 2022 killing of broadcaster Percival "Percy Lapid" Mabasa, although he has repeatedly denied involvement in the case.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the unsuccessful operation would not slow down efforts to track down Bantag and other wanted individuals.
"The PNP will remain relentless in pursuing those who are wanted by the law," Nartatez said, assuring the public that authorities will continue following leads and pursuing all lawful means to serve outstanding warrants.
The PNP also appealed for public cooperation by reporting information that could aid in locating Bantag.
