MANILA – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Saturday warned low-lying areas in Metro Manila as the water level of the La Mesa Dam in Quezon City has breached overflow elevation.

As of 2 p.m., the dam’s water level has reached 80.22 meters, exceeding its 80.15-meter overflow elevation, PAGASA said.

“Excess floodwaters from La Mesa Dam will flow directly into the Tullahan River,” it said.

PAGASA said affected areas include Caloocan, Malabon and Navotas cities; Fairview, Forest Hills Subdivision, Quirino Highway, Sta. Quiteria and San Bartolome in Quezon City; and North Expressway and La Huerta Subdivision in Valenzuela City.

Residents in the affected areas, particularly those living near riverbanks, were advised to take appropriate actions.

PAGASA also warned that continuous rainfall over the dam’s watershed could further raise the river level.

“It should also be noted that aside from the outflow from the reservoir, continuous rainfall over the watershed may further increase the river water level,” it said.

PAGASA said it will continue to monitor the hydrological condition of La Mesa Dam and provide updates to concerned agencies and local government units. (PNA)
