President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has suspended work in government offices and classes at all levels in the National Capital Region (NCR) and six provinces starting 3 p.m. on Wednesday due to the expected continuous heavy rains from Tropical Storm Maymay (international Kujira) and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat).

Under Memorandum Circular No. 121 signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto by authority of the President, the suspension covers Metro Manila and the provinces of Abra, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan and Zambales.

The memorandum was issued upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), citing forecasts of persistent heavy rainfall associated with the weather disturbance.

Government agencies involved in the delivery of basic and health services, disaster preparedness and response, and other essential services were directed to continue operations.

The circular also authorizes local chief executives to suspend classes and work in government offices in other areas, when warranted, in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

Meanwhile, the suspension of work in private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective management.
