‘Street Fighter 6’ adds first-ever Filipino character

Filipino fans of the legendary fighting game series “Street Fighter” have something big to celebrate. For the first time ever, a Filipino fighter is stepping into the World Warrior arena.

The announcement was made during this year’s Summer Game Fest, where Capcom revealed the Year 4 DLC lineup for “Street Fighter 6.” Leading the roster is Yasmine,  as the franchise’s first-ever Filipino character.

According to the game's description, Yasmine is a high school student and fighter from the Philippines who enters the Street Fighter Tournament in search of her missing older brother. Outside of combat, she is shy and soft-spoken, but transforms into a confident, fast, and expressive fighter in battle.

Her outfit reflects elements of the  Philippine flag. She dons a red-and-blue jacket, matching bottoms, a sun emblem on her shoulder, and a white top.

In combat, she wields a crescent-shaped karambit knife and uses a fast, dance-like fighting style taught by her grandfather. The teaser also shows places that closely resemble those in the Philippines, further reinforcing the cultural inspiration behind the character.

Her addition to "Street Fighter" reflects the growing representation of Filipinos  in global video games. This trend can be seen in Taguig’s Tenement Court featured in an "NBA The Run" trailer, as well as characters like Josie Rizal in “Tekken” and Neon in “Valorant.”

The reveal was well received by fans, particularly in light of other major announcements from the DLC wave, including guest fighter Tifa. Yasmine is expected to launch on August 3 as part of the game’s DLC roster, together with newcomers Arjun and Bosch.
