Song Joong-ki returns to KBS after 10 years with ‘Love Cloud’

A decade after “Descendants of the Sun,” Song Joong Ki returns to the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) with the upcoming romantic comedy series "Love Cloud."

According to an exclusive report by The Korea Times, the series has been scheduled for a weekend slot on the TV network and is expected to air in the first half of next year.

Song, 40, will be joined by actress Park Ji Hyun, 31, whom he worked with in the fantasy drama “Reborn Rich.”

"Love Cloud" tells the story of Kang Woo Joo, a former flight instructor, and Ahn Ha Nui, a former trainee pilot. Seven years after their last meeting, the two cross paths again in Jeju Island, where Woo Joo now works as an air traffic controller and Ha Nui is a pilot.

The series will be directed by Song Min Yeob, who directed the romance period drama “Youth of May.” Song Joong Ki’s return to KBS is especially notable because his last KBS series “Descendants of the Sun” became a cultural phenomenon.

The 2016 drama reached a national viewership rating of 38.8% for its final episode, per Star News, and earned major accolades at the 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards, including the prestigious Daesang Grand Award for Television. Song himself received the Most Popular Actor award.

"Descendants" remains one of the most successful K-dramas of its time, with strong audience scores such as 8.2/10 on IMDb and 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. "Descendant of the Sun" spawned  a Philippine and a Vietnamese adaptation aside from various foreign-language dubbing of the original Korean series.

 Song Joong Ki's filmography includes “The Innocent Man,” “Arthdal Chronicles,” and “Vincenzo.” His most recent series was “My Youth.”
