The live-action “Naruto” film is officially moving forward, with the project now in pre-production and entering a crucial stage: finding the actors who will play Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura.
The film company Lionsgate and director Destin Daniel Cretton have launched a worldwide casting search for the three central roles in the adaptation — Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. The open call is specifically focused on finding the actors who will play the members of Team 7, while casting for supporting characters will be announced at a later time.
Based on Masashi Kishimoto’s iconic manga series, the live-action film is being developed by Lionsgate with Cretton attached as both writer and director. Cretton is best known for directing Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" and the upcoming “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
Cretton announced the global casting search on Instagram, sharing his excitement about adapting a story that has connected with fans around the world for decades.
“Kishimoto-sensei’s stories have inspired generations of fans around the world, and it’s an honor to bring his world and characters to the big screen in live action for the very first time,” Cretton wrote. “I’m thrilled to kick off this worldwide casting search for our Team 7 and to bring the incredible universe of Naruto to life!”
Kishimoto has also shared his enthusiasm for the Hollywood adaptation. According to Variety, the creator said the project feels like a series of “miracles” happening one after another, adding that seeing Naruto become a Hollywood movie, especially with Cretton directing, is an incredible moment for him.
The filmmaker and creator are now looking ahead to the casting process, which will determine the actors who will portray the beloved ninja characters on screen for the first time in live action.
Lionsgate first revealed plans for the Naruto live-action movie in February 2024. Since its manga debut in 1999, Naruto has become one of the most successful anime and manga franchises worldwide, with the manga selling more than 250 million copies.
The story follows Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja known for his optimism, unconventional approach, and determination. He dreams of becoming Hokage, the protector and leader of his village. Alongside his teammates Sasuke and Sakura, Naruto faces powerful enemies and takes on challenges as he works to protect his village and the wider world.
