Indie Pop singer Mrld announces new single ‘Para Sakin’

Singer-songwriter Mrld teased a new single set for release on Friday, June 5. The 21-year-old revealed the track titled “Para Sakin,” last weekend.

On her official Facebook page she dedicates the song to those who are yearning for someone while still staying confident, or as she put it, “para sa mga yearning diyan pero maangas pa rin.”

Mrld, whose real name is Meriel de Jesus,  rose to fame with her indie-pop breakout “An Art Gallery Could Never Be As Unique As You,” which she wrote at just 14 years old. 

The song went viral organically on streaming platforms during the pandemic, eventually leading to her discovery by Kean Cipriano and her signing under O/C Records. Its official release in 2021 has since surpassed 224 million streams.

She followed that breakthrough with more popular tracks like “Ligaya” and “Ikaw Pa Rin,” becoming one of the most-streamed Filipina solo artists on Spotify. Last March, she announced that she had parted ways with O/C Records to continue her career as an independent artist.

At the height of her popularity, shefaced public scrutiny about her image and voice. Her deep tone and tomboyish aesthetic made some fans assume she was male. She clarified, however, that she was born with her voice and has never used medication to lower it.

Mrld has been open about her identity as a member of the LGBT community. She is in a relationship with fellow OPM artist and content creator Ryannah J (Ryannah Julia). The two often appear together at events and on social media. Her songs “Ligaya” and “Sandali,” have also become widely embraced as anthems within the local WLW (women-loving-women) community.
