Emily Blunt rejects AI for alien voice in Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’

Instead of turning to artificial intelligence, Emily Blunt chose to create her character’s alien voice the old-fashioned way for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming sci-fi thriller “Disclosure Day.”

During her appearance on an episode of “Hot Ones", host Sean Evans asked Blunt, 43, about a standout scene in the film where her character, a television meteorologist, undergoes a disturbing vocal transformation and begins speaking in strange sounds.

Blunt explained that the scene was challenging and that it was about four minutes long as her character gradually “disintegrates” on live television. There were different ways it could have been done, including using AI, but she chose not to go that route because it made her “a bit terrified.”

She instead experimented with her own voice during the recording session, producing a range of unusual sounds—clicks, humming, consonants, breathing noises, and other strange vocal effects. 

The team set up two microphones to capture the performance in a “really weird way.” Later on, the sound designer built the final alien language from those recordings.

"Disclosure Day" is an upcoming sci-fi thriller directed by Spielberg and written by David Koepp from a story by Spielberg himself. The film stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell. It will open in Philippine cinemas on June 10, followed by a global release on June 12.
