Actress and Quezon City Councilor Aiko Melendez has opened up about undergoing medical treatment for a thyroid condition.
In a series of Facebook posts, Aiko shared updates about her recent thyroid biopsy and scan while reflecting on her years of dealing with thyroid problems.
“I’ve actually been dealing with thyroid problems since my teenage years,” Aiko shared, recalling that she was previously treated and took medication but eventually stopped once she felt better.
Looking back, the 50-year-old admitted that she learned the importance of continuing regular follow-ups and making treatment decisions only with the guidance of a medical specialist.
“Thyroid conditions don’t always cause obvious symptoms, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the condition has gone away,” she reflected.
Aiko recently consulted with her endocrinologist, as they continue to manage her thyroid condition. She shared that she underwent a thyroid biopsy performed by her doctor, followed by a thyroid scan.
According to Aiko, her doctor’s initial assessment showed that her thyroid nodules appear to be benign or harmless. While she found the result reassuring, she said she is still praying that the official biopsy results will confirm that everything is okay.
She also explained why she needed both procedures, saying that a biopsy examines thyroid nodule cells to determine whether they are benign or malignant, while a thyroid scan helps doctors understand how the thyroid gland and nodules are functioning.
“This is especially important for someone like me who has been dealing with hypothyroidism, to understand the cause of my condition and determine the most appropriate treatment moving forward,” she explained.
Through her experience, Aiko reminded her followers to take their health seriously. “Listen to your body, don’t skip your checkups, and never stop your medication without your doctor’s advice.”
She also thanked those who have been praying for her, checking on her, and sending messages of encouragement. “Your love means so much to me,” Aiko wrote in one of her updates.
The actress expressed gratitude to the patient care staff who assisted and guided her throughout her tests at St. Luke’s Medical Center– Quezon City. She was also thankful for her health card, sharing that she did not have to spend anything for her procedures.
“Getting sick is really expensive. So take care of our health,” she wrote, encouraging everyone to prioritize their well-being.
Aiko said she is taking things one step at a time and trusting God’s guidance throughout her health journey. She hopes that sharing her experience can help even just one person avoid the same mistakes she made. Aiko also hopes she can encourage others take better care of their health.
