Utah State’s Jerrod Calhoun heading to alma mater Cincinnati – reports

Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun is set to take over as the new head coach at Cincinnati, several reports confirmed Monday.

Calhoun will replace Wes Miller, who was bought out after five seasons without an NCAA Tournament appearance.

A native of Ohio, Calhoun, 44, played a key role at Cincinnati as a student assistant under Bob Huggins during the 2003-04 season. He later worked with Huggins again at West Virginia from 2007 to 2012 before taking on his first head coaching role. Calhoun has previously led Division II Fairmont State (2012-17), Youngstown State (2017-24), and Utah State.

At Utah State, Calhoun compiled an impressive 55-15 record over two seasons. The Aggies earned NCAA Tournament berths both years and were ranked in the AP Top 25 for at least one week in each season.

In this year’s NCAA Tournament, No. 9 seed Utah State defeated No. 8 Villanova in the first round before falling 78-66 to top-seeded Arizona.

Utah State will now search for a new head coach for the fourth time this decade. The program previously saw Craig Smith leave for rival Utah in 2021, followed by Ryan Odom, who spent two seasons before moving to VCU and then Virginia. Danny Sprinkle coached the Aggies for one season, leading them to an NCAA Tournament victory before leaving for Washington. Calhoun was hired afterward, coming off a 118-106 record in seven seasons at Youngstown State.
