Chelsea defender Millie Bright has announced her retirement from professional football on Wednesday, ending a remarkable 17-year career in which she won 20 trophies with the Women’s Super League club.

The former England international, Chelsea’s longest-serving player with 314 appearances, will remain with the club in ambassadorial and trustee roles at the Chelsea Foundation.

“Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I’m now ready to say goodbye to playing football,” Bright said in a statement. “I’ve given all I can and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. It is now time and I’m ready to go into a new era. I’m always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way.”

Bright’s retirement closes a standout chapter that began when she joined Chelsea from Doncaster Rovers Belles in 2015. She went on to become a central figure in the club’s most successful era.

She set a Women’s Super League record with 216 appearances, surpassing Jordan Nobbs’ previous mark of 210 in November. Bright was part of Chelsea’s first major trophy win in 2015 and remained a constant presence through all 19 subsequent honors.

Her trophy haul includes eight WSL titles, six Women’s FA Cups, and four Women’s League Cups. She also played key roles in two domestic trebles achieved in 2021 and 2025.

Named club captain in 2023, Bright led Chelsea during their unbeaten domestic campaign in the 2024–25 season, playing more than 3,000 minutes while wearing the armband.

At international level, Bright earned 88 caps and scored six goals for England after making her debut in 2016. She was a key member of the squad that won Euro 2022 on home soil and later captained England to the 2023 World Cup final, where they finished runners-up to Spain.

Her contributions to football were recognized with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2024 New Year Honours.
