Patrick Cantlay withdrew from this week’s signature event at the Cadillac Championship on Tuesday, citing illness, and will be replaced in the field by Michael Thorbjornsen.
Ranked No. 32 in the world, Cantlay has been in steady form in recent weeks. He tied for seventh at the Valspar Championship, followed by a tie for 12th at the Masters and a tie for eighth at the RBC Heritage.
His withdrawal adds to a notable list of high-profile absences at Trump National Doral in Miami this week, including world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, No. 3 Matt Fitzpatrick, No. 9 Xander Schauffele, No. 12 Robert MacIntyre, and No. 14 Ludvig Aberg.
For Thorbjornsen, the replacement spot presents another opportunity to break through on the PGA Tour. The former Stanford standout is still seeking his first tour victory. This season, he contended at both The Players Championship and the Texas Children’s Houston Open, finishing tied for 22nd and tied for 14th, respectively. He also missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open before finishing tied for 33rd at the RBC Heritage.
The Cadillac Championship is the fifth signature event of the season, featuring a $20 million prize purse and elevated FedExCup points. It will be followed by another signature event at the Truist Championship next week, ahead of the PGA Championship.
The PGA Tour returns to Trump National Doral for the first time since 2016, when Adam Scott captured the title. -Field Level Media/Reuters
