Washington, D.C. is aiming to break the NFL Draft attendance record recently set in Pittsburgh, with ambitious plans already underway for the 2027 event.
The Washington, D.C.-based draft is targeting a combined three-day attendance of 1 million fans along the National Mall, according to early projections for the league’s annual showcase of incoming talent.
While the NFL Draft has previously been held in the nation’s capital, it has not returned since 1940, when it took place at the Willard Hotel.
For decades, the NFL hosted the draft exclusively in New York at Radio City Music Hall before shifting to a rotating model in 2015, bringing the event to different cities across the United States. Pittsburgh was the most recent host, marking the 11th city to stage the draft since the format change.
The league reported record-breaking attendance in Pittsburgh, where an estimated 805,000 fans attended over three days. That figure surpassed Detroit’s 2024 total of 775,000 and included a record 320,000 fans on opening night alone.
“We are excited to bring the 2027 Draft to Washington, D.C., a city rich in history and national pride,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “With the support of President Trump, the Commanders, Events DC, and Mayor Muriel Bowser, we’re looking forward to delivering an unforgettable experience as we celebrate the next generation of NFL stars.”
Looking ahead, Minneapolis and Buffalo have already expressed interest in hosting the 2028 NFL Draft, signaling continued competition among cities for one of the league’s most high-profile annual events.
