Senator Legarda honors Jose Rizal on 165th birth anniversary

Senator Loren Legarda reflected on the continuing relevance of Jose Rizal's ideals, saying his values of truth, education, and patriotism remain essential as the Philippines faces modern challenges. 

The country marks the 165th birth anniversary of the national hero on June 19. Legarda said Rizal’s vision continues to serve as a guide for both leaders and citizens, particularly in advocating unity and collective responsibility as foundations of national progress.

She cited a passage from "Noli Me Tangere," Chapter 25 (“In the House of the Philosopher”), highlighting the exchange between Crisóstomo Ibarra and Pilosopo Tasio, where Ibarra asserts his patriotic intent to build a school while confronting warnings about entrenched power structures. 

For Legarda, the scene reflects Rizal’s broader exploration of the tension between idealism and political realities, especially in efforts to advance reform through education.

“Rizal’s courage was expressed in his insistence that conscience must prevail over silence. His life compels us to ask: are we defending truth when it is most contested, are we protecting our environment when it is most fragile, are we nurturing education when it is most needed? These questions remain urgent responsibilities today,” Legarda said.

She added that Rizal’s concept of nationhood extended beyond politics and included culture, environmental stewardship, and civic duty. His writings on Filipino customs, appreciation of nature, and belief in education as the basis of freedom, she said, continue to influence legislative work on education reform, heritage preservation, and climate action.

Legarda also noted that as institutions work toward stability, Rizal’s call for conscience and responsibility remains especially timely, stressing that national progress depends on unity and a shared focus on public welfare.

She also praised initiatives promoting Rizal's intellectual legacy globally like the digital preservation of Rizal-related ethnographic materials in Berlin, support for Philippine Studies programs in international universities, and the Philippines’ role as Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2025.

“Rizal believed that freedom carries responsibility to one another, to our communities, and to generations yet to come. The best tribute we can offer him is to live with purpose, to build a society where justice and truth are non-negotiable,” Legarda said.

Legarda urged Filipinos, especially the youth, to embody Rizal’s values through action, stressing that his legacy lives on in those who choose integrity over convenience, courage over silence, and responsibility over indifference.
