Rome offers free movie screenings to beat the heat

ROME — Rome will offer free movie screenings in 11 air-conditioned cinemas as part of a heat-relief plan unveiled by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri on Wednesday, as much of Europe continues to endure extreme summer temperatures.

The program, inspired by the 1983 U.S. film The Big Chill, will run from Thursday through Aug. 4. It expands the Italian capital’s network of climate shelters, which already includes public libraries and museums where residents can escape the heat.

Gualtieri said the initiative will feature a selection of films, including recent releases, providing a comfortable space for people who do not have access to air conditioning at home.

The free screenings will be held daily from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with admission available on a first-come, first-served basis. The opening film will be the 2023 Italian comedy-drama There's Still Tomorrow.

A different movie will be shown each day at all 11 participating cinemas, giving residents an opportunity to stay cool while enjoying a film.

According to the Italian Air Force’s weather service, temperatures in Rome were expected to reach 97 degrees Fahrenheit (36 degrees Celsius) on Wednesday, with highs of 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius) forecast for both Thursday and Friday.
