PH government agencies on heightened alert for Super Typhoon Inday

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC) conducted a meeting on Wednesday (July 8, 2026) to focus on strengthening disaster preparedness and interagency coordination ahead of Super Typhoon Inday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said strong to gale-force gusts are expected over Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Calabarzon, most of Mimaropa, the Bicol Region, and most of the Visayas and Mindanao.

These will be triggered by the outer circulation of Super Typhoon Inday and the enhanced southwest monsoon, the Philippine News Agency (PNA) said.

PAGASA said Super Typhoon Inday is expected to remain outside the Philippine landmass and will movesnorthwest toward Taiwan by Saturday.

Concurrent MMDA and MMDRRMC Chairperson Don Artes led the discussion following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to ensure Metro Manila's readiness, PNA reported.

Chair Artes confirmed that the MMDA is prepared for heavy rains and potential flooding in the National Capital Region (NCR). He noted that all 73 pumping stations are currently functional and ready for deployment.

Aside from these preparations, the MMDA continues to implement flood mitigation measures, such as the “Bayanihan sa Estero” program and ongoing declogging operations throughout the region.

Meanwhile, several Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) districts, including the NCR, Northern Luzon, Southern Tagalog, Bicol Region, and southwestern Mindanao, have been placed on heightened alert in preparation for Super Typhoon Inday.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan has directed all districts and stations to implement the following preparedness measures under the Intensified Community Assistance, Awareness, Response and Enforcement (iCARE) campaign:

•   Facilitating early evacuation for high-risk coastal residents.

  
  

•  Issuing sea travel advisories and securing ports and PCG facilities.

  
  

•  Prepositioning and activating Deployable Response Groups (DRGs) in affected regions, including the PCG Regional Training Center Aurora.

  
  

•  Coordinating closely with local government units and disaster risk reduction councils.

The PCG Auxiliary has also been mobilized to support these response operations. BLUE ALERT

Office of Civil Defense-NCR Regional Director George Keyser announced that the NCR will be placed under Blue Alert starting Thursday.

He said the Virtual Emergency Operations Center has been activated, while the Physical Emergency Operations Center will operate from Friday to Saturday to ensure immediate coordination among agencies.

The Department of Public Works and Highways-NCR presented updates on flood-prone areas and the prepositioning of personnel and equipment.

In a separate statement, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said the "Oplan Kontra Baha" remains operational in flood-prone areas nationwide.

According to Dizon, the project is implemented across various regions, involving cleaning, desilting, dredging and removal of obstructions in waterways to improve rainwater flow and mitigate flood risks.

Currently, the initiative is being implemented in Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Tarlac, Naga and parts of the Visayas and Mindanao, including Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro and Maguindanao.
