The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified intelligence operations and community patrols as the peso continues to weaken against the US dollar, raising concerns over possible economic-related crimes.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police units nationwide have been ordered to closely monitor and swiftly respond to incidents such as theft, robbery, fraud, and scams that may arise amid financial uncertainties.
The move follows the peso's fall to a record PHP64.17 against the US dollar, fueling concerns over higher costs of imported goods and household expenses.
"While economic fluctuations are managed by our financial authorities, the PNP actively monitors street-level crime trends to prevent opportunistic offenses driven by financial strain," Nartatez said.
He added that the intensified security measures, aligned with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and guidance from Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, aim to protect consumers and small businesses while preventing economic concerns from escalating into public panic or disorder.
"We are tightening intelligence and community patrols in vulnerable areas to protect consumers and small business owners from economic-related crimes like theft or scams," he added.
