Health officials are urging the public to take immediate precautions against heat-related illnesses as four areas across Western Visayas prepare for dangerously high heat index levels.

According to a two-day forecast by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the following locations are expected to record severe heat levels on Tuesday:

  • Iloilo City: 43°C (Danger level)

  • Roxas City: 42°C (Danger level)

  • Mambusao, Capiz: 40°C (Extreme Caution level)

  • Dumangas, Iloilo: 40°C (Extreme Caution level)

Understanding the Risk Thresholds

PAGASA categorizes heat index values between 33°C and 41°C under Extreme Caution, a level where heat cramps and exhaustion are possible. Values between 42°C and 50°C fall into the Danger category, where heat cramps and heat exhaustion are highly likely, and heat stroke becomes a real threat with continued activity.

El Niño Amplifies Health Threats

The Department of Health Center for Health Development in Western Visayas (DOH WV CHD) issued an advisory highlighting heat-related illnesses as a primary danger during the ongoing El Niño phenomenon.

Alongside heat stroke and extreme dehydration, health officials warned against secondary health risks linked to El Niño conditions:

  • Exacerbation of pre-existing noncommunicable diseases

  • Spikes in vector-borne, water-borne, and food-borne illnesses

  • Heightened incidence of respiratory ailments, skin conditions, and animal bite cases

Key Safety Guidelines

To stay safe, the DOH WV CHD recommends the following preventive measures:

Avoid Direct Sun Exposure: Limit outdoors and peak sun exposure between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Hydrate Continuously: Drink plenty of clean water regularly—do not wait until you feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol, excessive caffeine, and sugary drinks, as they contribute to dehydration.

Dress Appropriately: Wear light, breathable clothing and take frequent rest breaks in cool or shaded spots.

Monitor Early Symptoms: Recognize early indicators of heat fatigue or stroke and seek immediate medical assistance if symptoms arise. -Paraluman News from a report of Perla Lena/Philippine News Agency
