DepEd seeks parents' help in ensuring safety in PH schools

After recent cases of violence affecting learners and school personnel, the Department of Education (DepEd) is calling on all Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to partner with academic institutions in ensuring safety within public schools nationwide.

In a report of the Philippine News Agency, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara underscored the essential need for schools to collaborate closely with the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

This partnership is vital to ensuring comprehensive support for our learners, advancing child protection initiatives, and addressing potential concerns at an early stage.

"Schools cannot do this alone. Parents cannot do this alone,” Angara said.

“Pananagutan nating lahat ang kaligtasan ng ating mga anak at ang PTA ang isa sa pinakamahalagang tulay na nagdurugtong sa pamilya, paaralan at komunidad upang mapangalagaan ang bawat mag-aaral (The safety of our children is our responsibility and the PTA is one of the most important means linking families, schools and community, so we can take care of each learner)," he said.

The importance of maximizing PTA general assemblies and regular meetings to strengthen communication between parents and teachers, Angara explained.

It is essential that these discussions cover key areas, including student attendance and behavior, and the identification of learners requiring additional support, he said.

He also emphasized that focus on advancing positive discipline, anti-bullying efforts, responsible digital citizenship, and mental health awareness.

"Our conversations with parents should not begin only when a problem has already occurred. The PTA gives us the opportunity to build trust, identify warning signs early, and work together before issues escalate," Angara said. 

He notd that it is essential to closely monitor children's academic performance and attendance. This is particularly important for learners who may be at risk of dropping out.

"When parents and teachers communicate regularly, when schools work closely with local governments and community partners, and when learners know they have trusted adults they can turn to, we create an environment where problems are addressed early, and every child feels safe, supported, and valued,” Angara said.

PTAs are also encouraged to actively organize and conduct various initiatives to support our community.

Suggested activities include parenting seminars, values formation sessions, digital safety orientations, and peer support programs.

DepEd also recommends fostering community dialogues and establishing partnerships with barangays, local government units, youth organizations, and health professionals.
