Chloe Zhao’s period drama “Hamnet” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s political thriller “One Battle After Another” won the top movie honors at the Golden Globes on Sunday (January 11).

“Hamnet” also earned an acting nod for Jessie Buckley who took home best drama actress for her turn as William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes who grieves the death of her son in the period drama “Hamnet”.

Celebrating the film’s victory backstage, Buckley’s co-star Paul Mescal said, “I think I said this like when the dust settles, drama school students are going to be studying what she did in Hamnet. They're going to be talking about it forever.”

Meanwhile, Brazilian actor Wagner Moura won best drama actor for “The Secret Agent”, a period drama in which he plays a teacher caught in the midst of the Brazilian military dictatorship.

Backstage, Moura remarked that films on this turbulent era of Brazil’s history should be continued to be made because “the dictatorship is still an open scar in our Brazilian life.”

“We recently had a far-right wing president in Brazil slash fascist that is a physical manifestation of the echoes of the dictatorship. So, the dictatorship is still very present in the Brazilian daily life. So, we have to keep making films about it,” Moura added.

“The Secret Agent” also earned the best foreign language film Golden Globe with director Kleber Mendonca Filho remarking that “cinema can be a way of expressing some grievances that we all have in terms of the society we live in.”

In other acting categories Rose Byrne won best comedy actress for the dark comedy “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You”, while Teyana Taylor won best supporting actress for “One Battle After Another.”

Best supporting actor Stellan Skarsgård won the honor for playing a filmmaker and absent father in the family drama “Sentimental Value”. Backstage, Skarsgård was asked about a potential third movie in the musical “Mamma Mia” franchise.

Having appeared in the films with Meryl Streep, Skarsgård teased the potential for a third sequel joking that Streep’s character (who’s supposed to be dead) will return in the sequel.

“Everyone can be brought back from the dead in the movies. So, I don’t know, a lot of people are working on it to bring her back,” Skarsgård said.

Netflix’s animated musical “Kpop Demon Hunters” also took home two Golden Globes for best animated feature and best original song for “Golden”.

The song’s co-writer and co-singer EJAE said backstage that she would like to take the film’s fictional musical group Huntrix beyond the animated medium.

British Netflix miniseries “Adolescence” dominated the television honors, winning best limited series and best supporting actor for Owen Cooper who played a pre-teen youth influenced by the toxic masculinity on the internet.

Erin Doherty and Stephen Graham also took home other acting honors for the same series.

At the age of 16, Cooper has become the youngest Golden Globe winner in the supporting actor category.

Having previously won the Emmy and Critics Choice award in the same category. “Never in a million years did we think that we would be here. The Emmys, the Critics Choice, you know, even in this continent, really,” said the British actor Cooper to reporters.

Other heavy hitters in the TV category included medical drama “The Pitt” winning best television series – drama and its lead actor Noah Wyle picking up the Globe for best drama actor in a television series.

Wyle, who broke out with the medical drama “ER” rejoined forces with showrunner John Wells who served as executive producer on “The Pitt”.

He described the project’s creation backstage: “This show really started coming together during the pandemic when we were looking at what was happening at healthcare in America. And soon thereafter, I called John Wells and I said ‘I know you don’t wanna do ER again and I don’t either but there might be another story to tell about what’s happening in the healthcare system.’”

Additionally, Seth Rogen’s film industry satire “The Studio” won best comedy series and Rogen also picked up the trophy for best actor comedy actor in a television series.

The Apple TV series’s first season had a meta moment with filming happening in a Golden Globes ceremony. Rogen told media that he plans to pull off something similar including this year’s Globes into “The Studio” season 2.

Other acting winners included Rhea Seehorn earning best drama actress for the sci-fi drama “Pluribus” and Jean Smart picking up best comedy actress for “Hacks”.

The Golden Globes kick off the Hollywood awards season that culminates with the Academy Awards in March. Winning a Globe can increase a film’s chances at earning the coveted best picture prize at the Oscars.

Globe honorees were chosen by more than 300 entertainment journalists from around the world with comedian Nikki Glaser returning to host the ceremony for a second time.
