The ‘Mandalorian and Grogu’ changes course from series to feature film

"The Mandalorian and Grogu" is officially heading to cinemas, bringing one of the most popular Star Wars stories from streaming to the big screen with a theatrical release on May 22.

The film continues the journey of Din Djarin and Grogu following the success of "The Mandalorian" on Disney+, expanding their story further into the wider Star Wars timeline.

Originally, creator and director Jon Favreau wrote scripts intended for a season of the series. However, according to reports from Yahoo Entertainment, the 2023 Hollywood strikes and shifting studio priorities led to the story being reconstructed into a feature film.

This transition from a planned fourth season into a theatrical release was driven by major production restructuring and changes in studio direction.

The film was officially announced by Lucasfilm on January 10, 2024. Its first teaser arrived later on YouTube on September 22, 2025, giving fans an early look at Din Djarin and Grogu’s return to live-action storytelling.

A full trailer followed on February 17, 2026, showcasing new action sequences, other returning characters including Zeb Orrelios (Steve Blum), and expanding galactic conflicts.

The film stars Pedro Pascal reprising his role as the Mandalorian Din Djarin, alongside Grogu (also affectionately called “Baby Yoda” by fans). Their journey continues to explore the evolving bond between bounty hunter and foundling as they navigate a more dangerous galaxy.

The film is rated PG-13 and has a runtime of 2 hours and 12 minutes.
