Teddy Corpuz opposes idea that video games cause violent behavior

Teddy Corpuz is not convinced by the idea that violent video games turn people into violent individuals, and he’s making his stance clear as calls to ban online games persist.

The Filipino musician and TV host recently took to social media to respond to proposals calling for a ban on video games. In a Facebook post on Saturday, June 27, he wrote, “Naglalaro ako ng Call of Duty pero okay naman ako. Okay naman mental health ko at anger management ko.”

Rocksteddy’s lead vocalist and a long-time co-host of “It’s Showtime,” argued that violent games do not automatically translate into violent behavior. He added that the issue is better addressed through broader societal factors, saying, “I think the issue has something to do with a better education system, tighter security sa mga schools, responsible gun ownership, and better parenting also.”

He also drew a comparison to physical sports, “Doon nga sa basketball court, may nag barilan at saksakan din because of pikunan sa game, so pa-ban na rin natin basketball sa bansa?”

Corpuz, 47, questioned whether banning games would actually solve the problem, saying there are many factors that need to be considered, studied, and addressed. For him, outright bans are a “shortcut route” that overlook the more complex causes of youth violence.

Corpuz’ remarks followed a proposal from Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla to impose a permanent ban on violent online games in the Philippines. Remulla said graphic digital content could desensitize young people to violence and death, and urged Congress and other government agencies to consider stricter regulations or potential restrictions on these games.

He also goes live regularly, engages with viewers, and posts humorous battle royale clips on Facebook.
