Manny Pacquiao has just been conferred with an honorary doctorate, with the former senator and eight-division world boxing champion receiving the distinction from the Philippine Normal University (PNU) on September 16.
The 47-year-old was conferred the degree of Doctor in Physical Education and Sports, Honoris Causa, during a ceremony held alongside PNU’s 125th founding anniversary celebrations.
“In recognition of his outstanding achievements in sports and his notable contributions to the development of national pride, the Philippine Normal University has formally conferred the first-ever Doctor of Physical Education and Sports, Honoris Causa, to Hon. Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Pacquiao,” the university said in a statement.
The ceremony also featured a special musical tribute for Pacquiao. The PNU Choral performed his anthem, “Para Sa ’Yo Ang Laban Na ’To,” and presented him with an original sheet music arrangement of the piece as a token of appreciation from the university community.
Pacquiao took his oath as an honorary alumnus of PNU, led by Dr. Ponciano Menguito, vice president of the PNU Alumni Association, Inc. After the ceremony, he interacted with members of the university community and other stakeholders.
Pacquiao later took to social media to express his gratitude for the honor.
“What a blessing and a very humbling moment. Thank you to the Philippine Normal University for conferring upon me the degree of Doctor in Physical Education and Sports, Honoris Causa.”
Pacquiao also encouraged young people to keep pursuing their dreams despite where they may start in life.
“To all the young people who have big dreams, keep going. Your beginning does not have to define your destination. And when success comes, make it more meaningful by using it to lift others.”
He ended his message by thanking the university for the warm welcome and special honor.
Pacquiao attended the ceremony with his wife, Jinkee, who also shared her pride over the honor.
In an Instagram post, Jinkee also uploaded photos from the awarding ceremony and wrote, “Doctor in Physical Education & Sports. I'm so incredibly proud of you, Sec. @mannypacquiao.”
Pacquiao’s honorary doctorate comes as he takes on another role in public service. He was recently appointed Secretary and Lead Convenor of the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC).
