The Pokémon franchise is returning to the big screen with “Pokémon: Wild Card,” a new animated movie set for worldwide release in 2027. It will be the first new Pokémon movie since 2020 and the franchise’s first feature-length animated film in years.

The movie was unveiled during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco on Sunday, August 30.

A brief teaser introduced the movie’s central characters, including a Pokémon Trading Card Game player and Mimikyu, the mysterious Ghost- and Fairy-type Pokémon. The teaser says the film is “coming 2027 and beyond,” potentially hinting that Wild Card could be the beginning of a new movie series.

The official Pokémon Instagram account also shared a clip from the upcoming film, describing it as an “all-new animated film” featuring a Pokémon TCG player and Mimikyu.

According to Deadline, Mimikyu first appeared in the 2016 video games Pokémon Sun and Moon. The Pokémon hides under an old rag painted to resemble Pikachu because it is lonely and wants to be loved like the famous mouse Pokémon. Beneath the disguise is a shadowy black, blob-like body with two round eyes.

Since its introduction, Mimikyu has appeared in multiple Pokémon games, the Pokémon Trading Card Game, and the Pokémon anime.

Behind the upcoming movie is a team with extensive anime experience. Katsuhiko Kitada, a key animator behind “I Want to Eat Your Pancreas,” is directing “Pokémon: Wild Card,” while Akemi Hayashi is handling the character designs.

Story Inc., the production company behind films such as “Weathering with You,” “Suzume,” and “The Colors Within,” is producing the movie. CloverWorks is handling the animation and is known for popular and critically acclaimed anime including “Horimiya,” “The Promised Neverland,” and “Spy x Family.”

“Pokémon: Wild Card” will be the first Pokémon movie since “Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle,” which was released in Japan in 2020.

According to Asia One, “Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu” is another Pokémon project coming in 2027. The stop-motion series was recently greenlit by Disney+ as part of a global distribution agreement with The Pokémon Company International.

The series will debut on Disney XD and stream exclusively on Disney+ next year.
