Despite having a successful career, growing business ventures, and the stability to start a family, Nadine Lustre says there is one role she is not ready to take on: motherhood.
In a candid and personal conversation with Kylie Verzosa in the latest episode of the video podcast “Almost Honest,” Nadine explained that a big part of her decision comes from being a breadwinner for most of her life.
“I think because... I'm a breadwinner kasi. I still am. And I'm always going to be proud of that,” she said.
The 32-year-old explained that she continues to support her parents and siblings, something she has been doing since she was very young. She started working at 12 years old through commercials and modeling, which allowed her to provide for her family, including supporting her brother’s education.
She said being able to help her loved ones at such a young age gave her a sense of fulfillment.
“It always felt so good being able to provide and just help your parents. It felt good. And even until now, it feels good,” Nadine shared.
However, she realized that she has spent much of her life taking care of others and putting their needs before her own. “I just feel like as soon as this is all over, I also want to take care of myself. I want to do things for myself,” she added.
Nadine said she has reached a point where she wants to focus more on her own goals and personal experiences. “I don’t want another responsibility. I don’t want to take care of another person,” she explained.
“That’s the reason why I don’t really want to become a mom,” she added.
When asked if her perspective could change in the future, especially as she gets older, the "Love, Siargao" star admitted, “I don’t know. But if I do get pregnant, then I will commit to it.”
Nadine also shared that her partner, Chris Bariou, has a different perspective on parenthood. “He wants kids. Yeah, he wants kids for sure.”
Nadine explained that her decision also comes from feeling that there are still many things she wants to accomplish for herself.
“May responsibilities pa kasi ako. Parang siguro gusto kong ma-feel muna na I’m not supporting anyone for a good period of time. Then maybe that will change.”
Nadine added that she believes her feelings could possibly change someday, but she is not forcing herself to decide now.
“I don't know. Siguro, it will happen,” Nadine concluded.
