Veteran actor Mon Confiado, known for his compelling portrayal of antagonists, recently shared his thoughts through Facebook.

Confiado, 58, wrote, “I'm not limited to villains—people simply trust me with complex darkness.” He described typecasting as a sign of trust in his ability to bring depth to challenging roles.

He then broke down why certain actors, like himself, are often cast as villains. Regarding screen presence, Confiado explained, “May mga aktor na likas na nagpo-project ng matinding intensity, awtoridad, panganib, o pagiging unpredictable.”

He emphasized, “Napakahalaga ng ganitong agarang pagiging believable.” He added, “Ang paraan ng iyong tindig, boses, tingin ng mga mata, at kahit ang katahimikan o stillness mo sa eksena,” leads casting directors to think, “Kapani-paniwala na siya agad bilang antagonist.”

He also highlighted how performances from the past influence how people predict his future performances. “Kapag nakapagbigay ka na ng mahusay na pagganap bilang kontrabida sa mga pelikula, tumatatak iyon sa isip ng mga tao.” This creates a cycle of trust: “Nagawa niya nang mahusay noon, kaya, kaya niya ulit.”

Beyond performance, Confiado pointed to visual branding. “Minsan, hindi lang pag-arte ang basehan—kabilang din dito ang itsura, facial structure, expressions, at kung paano ka binabasa ng camera.”

He noted that certain faces naturally project authority, mystery, or psychological complexity, all of which are highly sought after in antagonist roles.

The actor also discussed how casting decisions are shaped by industry workflows. “Mabilis ang galaw ng production teams. Madalas silang umaasa sa mabilis na mental references.”

Still, Confiado said that being typecast is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, he shared that “maraming respetadong aktor ang nakabuo muna ng matibay na karera mula rito bago sila lumawak sa iba pang mga papel,” he concluded.

Throughout his career, Confiado has taken on numerous villain roles in films and series such as “Heneral Luna,” “Senior High,” "In Thy Name,” “Nanahimik ang Gabi,” “Arisaka,” and “Salvageland.” He is the son of the late actor Angel Confiado.

He also shared that some of his favorite actors known for portraying villains on screen include Joaquin Phoenix and Gary Oldman.

Confiado is an award-winning character actor known for his versatility across a wide range of roles, having earned multiple Best Supporting Actor honors.

His notable wins include the Metro Manila Film Festival (2022), PMPC Star Awards for Movies (2024), and the FAMAS Awards (2008), for performances in films such as “Nanahimik ang Gabi" and “Faces of Love.”
