Filipino American actress Liza Soberano has joined the jury for the Golden Globes Impact Prize for Documentary, which will be presented during the Venice Film Festival.

Variety first reported Soberano’s appointment, which the Filipino American actress later confirmed on social media. She was honored to be part of the jury. “Grateful to be part of a celebration of powerful storytelling and the filmmakers who bring important stories to light,” she wrote.

The documentary prize was founded by the Golden Globes and the Artemis Rising Foundation, with support from Think-Film Impact Production. It recognizes a documentary feature in the Venice Film Festival’s official selection for using compelling storytelling to highlight important social issues.

The 28-year-old has also spoken about film’s ability to go beyond entertainment, particularly documentaries, which she sees as a way to challenge injustice, inspire hope, and remind audiences of their shared humanity. She also considers the genre a space for some of the most courageous and memorable storytelling today.

For Soberano, the role is another opportunity to celebrate filmmakers on an international stage. In 2024, she also served as a jury member at the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF).

The appointment comes as Soberano continues to build her career outside the Philippines. After establishing herself as a successful actress in the country, she made her Hollywood debut in Focus Features’ 2024 horror-comedy “Lisa Frankenstein,” starring Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse.

She is also venturing into animation, lending her voice to a lead character in DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming “Forgotten Island,” scheduled for release on September 23.

Soberano recently returned to the Philippines to promote the animated film. On August 25, she joined co-star H.E.R. and directors Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado for a special fan event at the SM Mall of Asia Main Atrium.

As part of her advocacy, Soberano is an ambassador for Save the Children Philippines while she also supports women’s and children’s rights, protection against online sexual exploitation, and mental health.

The full jury for the Golden Globes Impact Prize for Documentary includes Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne; Oscar-winning producer and Artemis Rising Foundation founder Regina K. Scully; Oscar-winning producer and Impact Partners co-founder Geralyn White Dreyfous; and Danielle Turkov Wilson, founder and CEO of Think-Film Impact Production.

The winning documentary will receive a $10,000 cash prize from the Artemis Rising Foundation.

The Golden Globes, Artemis Rising Foundation, and Think-Film Impact Production first partnered to launch the documentary prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The collaboration later expanded to the Venice Film Festival last year.

The 83rd Venice Film Festival runs from September 2 to 12.
