The Philippine indie drama “Status: Rejected,” starring award-winning actress Ruby Ruiz, is heading to Europe for its international premiere at the 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF), which will take place from November 6 to 22, 2026, in Tallinn, Estonia. The film is part of the festival’s First Feature Competition.
Black Cap Pictures and Clever Minds Productions, which co-produced the film, announced its selection on Thursday, October 8. In a social media post, they highlighted the film’s place among the festival’s first features, writing: “FROM THE PHILIPPINES TO TALLINN. A debut feature from the Philippines, Status: Rejected joins 12 first features from filmmakers across 19 countries.”
Directed by Vahn Leinard Pascual, the film follows an elderly widow, played by Ruiz, who dreams of building a better life in America and to eventually reunite with her son. Obtaining a visa proves difficult though.
As she prepares to apply once more, a friend encourages her to create a social media account in hopes of improving her chances of approval. The cast also includes Alessandra de Rossi, Beverly Salviejo, Yani, and Karl Medina.
“Status: Rejected” was also among the entries at the 2026 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, where Ruiz won Best Actress, sharing the award with Marietta “Pokwang” Subong, who was recognized for “2 Valid IDs.” The film also received the festival’s NETPAC Award for Best Full-length Film.
Ruiz, 65, has built an extensive career in film and television, with credits in Filipino films such as “Iska,” “Ma’ Rosa,” “Ginhawa,” and “Ekstra”. She also appeared in “Expats,” a drama series starring Nicole Kidman, adding another international film to her resumé.
“Status: Rejected” is Pascual’s feature-length directorial debut, after working on short films and animation projects. One of his earlier works, "Sina Alexa, Xander at ang Universe," was selected as an official student short film entry at the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
The 26-year-old also directed the short drama and fantasy film “Alingasngas ng mga Kuliglig,” which received a co-production grant from the Film Development Council of the Philippines’ International Silent Film Festival Manila: Mit Out Sound. The film later won Best Picture.
Pascual’s other projects include “Mary Go Round, Mary Round,” “Blue Is Not My Favorite Color,” and “Ang mga Sisiw sa Kagubatan.” His short films and animation projects have been screened at local and international film festivals.
