Girls’ Generation’s Yuri parts ways with SM Entertainment after 19 years

Yuri of Girls' Generation is leaving her talent agency SM Entertainment after 19 years. Yuri was a trainee of the agency for almost 6 years until she made her debut with the group.

SM Entertainment announced that Yuri, whose real name is Kwon Yuri, will conclude her exclusive contract with the company on August 31. The decision was arrived at mutually between the singer-actress and the agency.

SM Entertainment, home to some of K-pop’s biggest acts including Super Junior, Red Velvet, and EXO, has represented Yuri since her debut with Girls’ Generation in 2007.

On Friday, July 31, the agency shared the news through its fan platform Weverse while thanking fans for their continued support and celebrating Yuri’s achievements throughout her career.

SM Entertainment looked back on Yuri’s career, praising her achievements as an artist.

“From her debut as a member of Girls’ Generation in 2007, Kwon Yuri helped lead the global K-pop wave and grew into one of the defining artists of her generation. It has been a precious privilege for SM Entertainment to be part of her journey—not only as a singer but also as a successful actress,” the agency said.

The company also praised Yuri’s accomplishments in various fields, including music, acting, variety shows, and hosting, recognizing her as an all-around entertainer who has continued to make her mark throughout her career.

Although Yuri’s exclusive contract with SM Entertainment will come to an end, she will remain involved in Girls’ Generation’s group activities.

“We sincerely support Kwon Yuri as she embarks on this new chapter in her career. Thank you,” the agency concluded.

Following Yuri’s departure, Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, and Yoona are now the remaining Girls’ Generation members who remain signed under SM Entertainment.

Yuri, 36, debuted with Girls’ Generation in August 2007 alongside Yoona, Taeyeon, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, and Sunny. The group debuted with “Into The New World” and became one of K-pop’s most influential acts, with a legendary discography featuring hits such as “Gee,” “I Got a Boy,” and “The Boys.” 

The eight-member group is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2027, with plans for a concert tour and a new album to commemorate the milestone.
