Playing the film's titular hero was not a walk in the park as Gerald Santos recalled the challenges in making the historical film “Liwanag at Dilim: Heneral Emilio Jacinto.” Gerald found the filming somewhat difficult because of the heavy drama demanded by the script and the very physical war scenes.
“Mahirap, 'yung script kasi medyo may pagka-heavy drama. Acting-wise, demanding siya. Emotionally, physically din kasi may mga war scenes kami ginawa,” Gerald shared.
Despite the difficulties, the singer-actor said he was happy with how the film turned out. “Napaka-challenging pero sobrang fulfilling nung matapos namin kasi ang ganda ng kinalabasan,” he added.
Gerald, 35, also shared that the film received the support of lawyer and film producer Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, who had already seen the movie and believed in the project, something Gerald said he was grateful for.
The film was shot for six weeks, beginning on June 13 and wrapping up during the first week of August. Gerald explained that the six-week period included not only the actual shooting but also the planning and preparation involved in every production day.
Portraying Jacinto, known as the “Brains of the Katipunan,” also gave Gerald a deeper appreciation of the national hero’s patriotism, principles, and how he used his God-given talents and gifts to serve others.
He said he was particularly impressed by Jacinto’s intelligence and determination, especially how he continued to use his skills and share his ideas despite the many obstacles he faced.
“Ginawa niya ‘yung Kartilya ng Katipunan, ang dami niyang mga essays na ginawa, ‘yung Kalayaan, Liwanag at Dilim, kung saan namin kinuha ‘yung title ng movie,” he explained.
The production also received guidance from historian and professor Prof. Xiao Chua, who partnered with the movie and provided historical consultation. Gerald said they were thankful for his extensive input, while the descendants of Gat Emilio Jacinto also shared information that helped the team bring his story to the screen.
The guidance was particularly important given the sensitivity of portraying a national hero.
Directed by Rommel Ramilo, who also serves as Gerald’s longtime manager, the film aims to reach a wider audience through the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
“We’re hoping na makapasok kami sa Metro Manila Film Festival para mas malawak iyong audience na ma-reach namin. Mas maraming makanood na mga tao, especially iyong ating mga kabataan. Napakarami pong aral na matututunan nila sa buhay ni Gat Emilio Jacinto,” Gerald said.
Gerald recently shared on social media that the film had been submitted to the MMFF, asking supporters to pray for its inclusion among the festival’s remaining four slots.
The completed film was officially submitted for MMFF consideration on September 30. It features a notable ensemble cast, including Aljur Abrenica, Robert Seña, Sid Lucero, and Angel Aquino, with Alden Richards making a special appearance as Jose Rizal.
Gerald rose to prominence after winning the second season of “Pinoy Pop Superstar” in 2006. Since then, he has built a career across television, musical theater, film, and music, notably portraying Thuy in the international touring production of “Miss Saigon” and appearing in “Mamasapano: Now It Can Be Told.”
