Filipino American actor Dave Bautista just landed the role of Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of the hit video game franchise “God of War.”

Bautista, best known for playing Drax in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and Beast Rabban, in the “Dune” franchise, will lead the series as the famed Spartan warrior. Variety reported the casting on Thursday, following earlier reports that Bautista was being considered for the role.

He takes over from Ryan Hurst, who was originally announced as Kratos in January. Hurst suffered a torn bicep while filming, an injury that required surgery and was expected to cause a lengthy production delay. Amazon and Sony, which are co-producing the series, ultimately decided to recast the role with Bautista rather than wait for Hurst to recover.

Production initially began in Vancouver in February and is expected to resume in the coming weeks with Bautista in the lead. Scenes featuring Hurst will now have to be reshot.

Bautista, 57, brings plenty of experience to a role that requires both a commanding physical presence and demanding action work.

Before making the transition to Hollywood, Bautista was a professional wrestler called Batista and has since built a successful acting career. He previously worked with Prime Video on “The Wrecking Crew,” starring alongside Jason Momoa.

For Filipino audiences, Bautista’s casting also carries a personal connection. Born to a Filipino father and a mother of Greek descent, Bautista has long spoken proudly about his Filipino roots. His tattoos reflect both sides of his heritage, including the Philippine and Greek flags on his left arm, as well as the three stars and a sun from the Philippine flag.

His connection to the Philippines deepened after a 2006 World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) visit to the country. Bautista has said that the warm reception he received from Filipino fans during the visit strengthened his connection to his Filipino heritage.

Bautista will join the previously announced cast, including Callum Vinson, Max Parker, Sherilyn Allen, Teresa Palmer, Mandy Patinkin, Alastair Duncan, Danny Woodburn, and Ed Skrein.

The “God of War” series centers on Kratos, a powerful warrior known for his muscular build and battles against gods and mythological creatures. Bautista will star alongside Vinson, who plays Atreus.
