Speaking in different tongues: BINI greets Coachella crowd in Philippine dialects

The Nation's Girl Group, BINI, returned onstage at Coachella on April 17, following their groundbreaking performance on April 10 in one of the world's most popular music fest.

BINI, drawing a large and energetic crowd, performed at the Mojave Stage on Friday. They opened their set with “Strings” from their second studio album, “Feel Good,” followed by tracks from the BINIverse EP, “Zero Pressure” and “Out of My Head.”

Just after their third song, each member introduced herself. As a pleasant surprise, BINI greeted the audience in different Philippine dialects, earning loud cheers from the crowd and BLOOMs. 

Maloi opened her introduction in Tagalog Batangueño, saying, “Ala eh! Pagkakasalida, ako po si Maloi!” (The show has started!) Sheena followed in Tagalog with, “Kumusta, Coachella? I’m Sheena!”

Jhoanna also greeted in Tagalog: “Isang magandang hapon! Ako po si Jhoanna!” Gwen spoke in Bikolano, “Marhay na hapon, Coachella! I’m Gwen. Oragon!” (Good afternoon, Coachella! “Oragon” means fierce or strong.)

Aiah and Colet spoke in Cebuano/Bisaya, “Coachella, shagit ug kusog! My name is Aiah!” (Coachella, shout loudly!)

“Maayong hapon, Coachella! I’m Colet!” (Good afternoon, Coachella!)

Stacey continued in Ilocano, “Coachella! Naimbag nga aldaw kanyayo amin. I’m Stacey!” (Good day to you all.) Mikha closed the introductions in English with, “What’s up, Coachella! It’s Mikha!”

In unison, the group introduced themselves: “And we are BINI, all the way from the Philippines.” Before continuing their performance, BINI briefly interacted with BLOOMs and the crowd, thanking them for the overwhelming support.

The rest of their set featured fan favorites, including “Karera,” “Salamin Salamin,” “Blink Twice,” “Cherry on Top,” “Blush,” “Bikini,” and their closing number, “Pantropiko.”

They closed their set with a visual of the Philippine flag as their backdrop, proudly making a statement that despite the diversity of Filipinos, we stand united under one flag.
