A24’s breakout horror hit “Backrooms” is getting an upgrade in cinemas this coming weekend, with its re-release set for July 4.

According to Variety, the studio is rolling out an extended cut titled “Backrooms: Everything Must Go,” adding 15 minutes of  footage. Audiences now have a reason to watch it or even return to watch the extended version.

The new version runs for 2 hours and 6 minutes  with exclusive post-credit scenes featuring new material from 20-year-old director Kane Parsons.

“Backrooms” became one of this summer’s biggest surprise box office hits, earning $331 million worldwide. After initially tracking for a $20 million to $30 million US opening, the film far exceeded expectations with an $81.4 million debut.

The movie has since grossed $184.1 million in North America and more than $330 million worldwide (around ₱20.351 billion), making it A24’s highest-grossing film ever. It also outperformed several May releases, including “Mortal Kombat II,” which earned $129.3 million at the US box office, and “Star Wars: Mandalorian and Grogu,” which has taken in $175.6 million in the US and $327.8 million globally.

Made on a reported $10 million budget, the film’s success has already led to the development of a sequel from Blumhouse, 21 Laps, and Chernin Entertainment,  Deadline reported.

The film follows a therapist (Renate Reinsve) whose patient (Chiwetel Ejiofor) disappears into a dimension beyond reality, forcing her to step into that strange world in an attempt to save him.
