Actor Niño Muhlach admitted that he fell asleep while driving, causing a road accident in Antipolo City, Rizal, on Sunday, August 23. The crash left a bystander injured and damaged several roadside properties and vehicles, with Muhlach acknowledging that he was at fault.

In an official statement released Monday, Muhlach clarified earlier reports suggesting that a possible mechanical problem caused the crash. The 54-year-old said the information came from the police’s preliminary investigation and was not based on any statement he had personally given.

“I am issuing this official statement to set the record straight regarding the recent vehicular accident involving my vehicle. First and foremost, I want to clarify that I had not previously given any personal statement regarding the incident,” Muhlach said.

The accident happened along Marcos Highway in Antipolo, where Muhlach’s SUV hit a bystander who was eating at a roadside eatery. The vehicle also struck a parked motorcycle, which reportedly became lodged under the SUV, and damaged nearby establishments, including a barber shop.

“I want to be completely clear and honest: the accident was entirely my fault.”

He explained that he was driving himself that day because his regular driver was on his scheduled day off. He said his demanding and exhausting schedule had left him fatigued.

“While fatigue overtook me, that is no excuse. Falling asleep at the wheel led directly to hitting a pedestrian and damaging nearby establishments,” he said.

The injured person was brought to a hospital for medical treatment. Muhlach also spoke about his responsibility toward those affected by the crash.

“I take full personal and legal responsibility for what happened. My priority right now is ensuring that the affected individual receives all necessary care, support, and medical assistance, and that all damages caused to the properties and establishments are fully compensated and rectified,” he said.

Muhlach also apologized to the injured individual, and everyone affected by the accident.

“I am deeply sorry to the victim, their family, and everyone affected by my negligence. I am fully cooperating with authorities as this matter is being resolved,” Muhlach concluded.
