After 25 years as a comedian, K Brosas now wants to try drama, action, horror

From early years as a singer to being a seasoned performer and comedian-actress, K Brosas traced her showbiz journey in her first-ever vodcast interview on “The Good Take,” hosted by acclaimed actor Christian Bables. 

She reflected on how she built her career, transitioned across different stages of performance, and which concerts remain closest to her heart.

She began by looking back at her early career, having started performing since she was around 17. 

Brosas started professionally as a singer and described herself as someone who has “been there, been that”—from jazz and lounge singing to working abroad. For her, singing was really the root of her career, coming from the idea of being a “professional” performer who gets paid for her craft.

When asked whether singing or comedy is harder to do live, the “A Secret in Prague” actress said both are challenging in their own way, but singing is more difficult. Her reason is simple: if you lose your voice or get sick, you can’t perform. 

Comedy, on the other hand, she believes can still come out naturally as long as you have it in you. For her, humor is instinctive—you “either have it or you don’t.” 

She even playfully teased that she has proven she can sing while in unusual positions, recalling a performance on “Gandang Gabi Vice" where she sang in a comedic setup.

Despite her comedy reputation today, Brosas emphasized that she really started as a singer. She also clarified that she doesn’t claim to be “great,” but she knows she can sing. For her, talent is subjective—just like beauty. Some people will appreciate it, others won’t, and she respects that difference. However, she admitted she strongly disagrees when people say “hindi ka marunong kumanta.”

She also shared how her performance career evolved. As a child, she was involved in theater through Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) for about four years. She was active in different clubs—dance, singing, theater—and even joined beauty contests, which she also won. This early exposure helped shape her stage confidence.

Eventually, she transitioned from theater into the world of “sing-along bars,” which she explained was what comedy bars used to be called. Back then, performers were expected to do more than just comedy.

“Dati, hindi pwedeng nakakatawa ka lang. Dapat marunong kang kumanta. Kasi ang trabaho ng sing-along master eh hindi naman stand-up,” she shared.

They were also required to entertain and engage the audience. She described it as a demanding job that ran late into the night: “Mula 9 o'clock hanggang alas 3 ng madaling araw. Ayun iyong trabaho namin dati as in 9 to 3.”

Over time, she also realized that people began seeing something naturally funny in her, which eventually helped shape her path into comedy and performance work.

When asked about her most memorable concerts, Brosas said she recently celebrated 25 years in showbiz with her “25K” concert at New Frontier Theater. However, her most unforgettable concert was actually her “18K” show at the same venue, which she described as “palong-palo” and overwhelming in the best way.

“Nakuha ko lahat ng guest. Napuno iyong venue. Nag-sold out iyon mga two weeks before. Napuno iyon, so mga 80% puro mga fans lang ng mga guest ko.”

What made it even more special for her was the lineup of guests, including Kyla, Angeline Quinto, Jaya, the late comedian Chokoleit, and Pooh. According to her, the energy of the show and the mix of guests made it something she will never forget, with each performance bringing its own distinct moment.

Throughout the conversation, Brosas also reflected on what she still wants to do next. Beyond comedy and dramedy projects, she said she dreams of taking on new roles.

“Mag-drama, mag-action, mag-horror. Iyan ang pangarap ko.”

While she’s proud of the projects she’s done so far, Brosas, whose real name is Maria Carmela, wants to explore a different side of herself as a performer, even if comedy will always be part of who she is.

“Gusto kong mag-try na as in walang comedy at all. Gusto ko [naman] iyong iba,” she concluded.
