WEF head hails 'historic moment' at opening ceremony in Davos

The president of the World Economic Forum (WEF) hailed a "historic moment" during the meeting's opening ceremony in Davos on Monday (January 19).

"It's a moment of uncertainty, but also possibility, not a moment to retreat, but a moment to rise," Borge Brende said during a speech to delegates from the stage of the Congress Hall.

WEF organisers have said that over 3,000 delegates from more than 130 countries will attend this year, including 64 heads of state and government, particularly from emerging economies.

The forum agenda has to some extent been overtaken by the U.S. President Donald Trump's dramatic policy moves, including his demand in recent days that the United States take over Greenland.
