Senator Mark Villar: PH needs globally competitive workforce as labor market evolves

Senator Mark Villar said the Philippines needs a globally competitive workforce as the labor market continues to evolve.

“Ito ang ating layunin—isang mas competitive na Filipino workforce. Hindi lamang sa sipag at tiyaga makikilala ang ating mga manggagawa, kundi pati sa kanilang husay, kakayahan, at kahandaan sa modern at digital na mga trabaho,” Villar said.

He expressed hope that the private sector would continue working with the Philippine government in strengthening workers' skills and generating jobs.

Villar made the statement while spearheading the Markabuhayan Job Fair 2026 at SM City Taytay. The event brought together job seekers, employers, government agencies, and beneficiaries of various welfare assistance programs.

The one-day event drew hundreds of applicants who explored employment opportunities across multiple industries.

Aside from job matching activities, assistance was provided to micro and small business owners affected by recent economic challenges.

An on-site Land Transportation Office (LTO) Caravan was set up at the event to provide attendees with convenient access to licensing services, including permit processing and renewals.

“Our workers are the backbone of our economy. Their hard work keeps our industries moving and our communities growing,” he said.

The senator acknowledged persistent labor challenges, specifically regarding job-skills mismatch, underemployment, and unemployment.

These issues are particularly significant given the evolving demands of the global labor market.

“We continue to improve programs that match skills with the right opportunities, so our workers can reach their full potential, especially in an evolving labor market,” Villar said.
