PH Senate ready for VP impeachment trial, Senator Gatchalian says

Senate President Sherwin "Win" Gatchalian on Tuesday said preparations for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte remain on schedule as he inspected the venues and facilities that will be used during the proceedings.

During a walkthrough of the Senate building, Gatchalian said the chamber has completed the necessary preparations despite limited space, with both the prosecution and defense expected to inspect their assigned areas within the week.

"We're on track, and even though the space is limited, we've managed to put everything in order. I understand the prosecution will come here to inspect its area. We will give both the defense and the prosecution the opportunity to inspect their respective areas within the week," he said in Filipino during an ambush interview.

"We are very prepared. We are ready. In fact, today is the physical inspection, and we will continue to make improvements as we go along," he added.

Gatchalian was joined during the inspection by Senate Secretary and Impeachment Court Clerk Renato Bantug Jr. and other Senate officials.

The group examined the key areas that will be used during the impeachment trial, checking their condition, layout, and overall readiness.

The impeachment trial of Vice President Duterte is scheduled to formally begin on July 6.

Gatchalian has previously said the proceedings could run for seven to eight months, depending on the presentation of evidence, witness testimonies, and any delays arising from procedural motions.
