Landslides caused by intense overnight rains have destroyed 400 meters of railway line leading to Machu Picchu, forcing Peru to suspend train service on the alternative Hidroelectrica route. The mayor of Machu Picchu district estimates repairs will take 10 to 15 days. Tourists can still reach the ancient citadel using the fully operational Ollantaytambo.
