Oxford retains world no. 1 position for tenth consecutive year

The University of Oxford has retained the number one position in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, extending its record-breaking reign to a tenth consecutive year.

Oxford achieved an overall score of 98.2, supported by an exceptionally strong research environment. Its continued success reflects the university’s research reputation, productivity and ability to attract funding, as well as its broader performance in teaching, research quality, international outlook and industry engagement.

The 2026 ranking includes 2,191 institutions from 115 countries and territories, making it one of the world’s most extensive assessments of higher education. It is widely used by students, academics, governments and industry experts to compare research-intensive universities.

Princeton University climbed to joint third place with the University of Cambridge. It is the only US institution to record its best-ever finish in this year’s ranking. The United States nevertheless remains the dominant country in the top 10, with seven universities represented, while the United Kingdom accounts for the remaining three.

Universities across Asia also strengthened their international standing. China now has five institutions in the top 40, compared with three last year, although its leading universities remained broadly stable. This indicates growing depth across the country’s higher education system rather than significant movement among its highest-ranked institutions.

Hong Kong achieved a record six places in the top 200, supported by improvements in teaching indicators, including teaching reputation and student-to-staff ratios.

India reached another major milestone by becoming the second most-represented country in the ranking for the first time, behind only the United States. Its growing number of ranked institutions reflects the expanding scale and international visibility of Indian higher education.

Overall, the 2026 results combine continuity at the top with an increasingly diverse global university landscape.
