Alex Eala weathers the storm to claim her first WTA title in Washington

In a historic display of resilience and fearless tennis, 21-year-old Alexandra "Alex" Eala, the Philippine tennis sensation, dismantled top seed and home favorite — American Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 to capture the Washington Open.

With this monumental victory on Monday (Tuesday in the Philippines, August 4, 2026), Eala officially became the first player from the Philippines to win a Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour-level singles title.

Weathering the Storm

The championship clash was a true test of physical endurance and mental fortitude for both Eala and Pegula.

After persistent rain delayed Sunday’s scheduled start by nearly three hours, play was eventually suspended overnight. 

Eala walked off the court trailing by a set, although holding a slim 2-1 edge in the second.

When the action resumed on Monday, the momentum swung decisively in Eala's favor.

Pegula, chasing a third Washington crown following titles in 2019 and 2021, looked to dictate play, but Eala neutralized the American's pace with deep, heavy groundstrokes to capture the second set.

Eala was simply unstoppable in the final set, firing crisp winners and unleashing a lethal left-handed serve to race through a 6-0 bagel in the decider.

Overall, Eala won 10 of the 13 games played after the restart, completely taking control of the match.
