Alex Eala stuns Osaka in straight sets, battles Pegula in DC Open final

Alex Eala delivered one of the biggest victories of her career on Sunday, stunning former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2 to reach the final of the Mubadala DC Open in Washington, DC, US.

Facing a four-time Grand Slam champion and one of the sport’s most accomplished hard-court players, Eala showed few signs of pressure. The world No. 28 produced a composed and clinical performance, dispatching the third-seeded Osaka in just one hour and 16 minutes to secure a place in her first WTA 500 final.

The victory also sent the Filipina into her second tour-level final above the WTA 125 category, following her runner-up finish at the Eastbourne Open last year. It will be the first hard-court final of her WTA Tour career.

The opening set remained finely balanced as both players searched for an early advantage. Eala broke Osaka in the third game, only for the Japanese star to respond immediately and level the contest.

Neither player gave much away over the next several games, with the score locked at 4-4 before Eala made her move. Two consecutive unforced errors from Osaka handed the Filipina a crucial break and a 5-4 lead.

Eala made no mistake while serving for the set, confidently closing it out to take control of the semi-final.

Her momentum carried into the second set as she quickly established a 2-0 advantage. Osaka attempted to work her way back into the match, but Eala continued to absorb the former champion’s power while maintaining pressure from the baseline.

Another decisive break in the seventh game moved Eala to within one game of victory. She then completed the upset in emphatic fashion, sealing her place in the championship match and adding another landmark result to her rapidly growing résumé.

Eala will face Jessica Pegula in the final after the American defeated fourth seed Diana Shnaider 7-5, 6-4 in the other semi-final.

The title match will be a rematch of last year’s Miami Open semi-final, where Pegula ended Eala’s breakthrough run. This time, the Filipina will have the opportunity to turn the tables—and capture the biggest title of her career.
